Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, announced Tuesday it has entered into an agreement with Eli Lilly and Company to acquire US rights in Viagra and Cialis tablets for about $1.6 billion, with a potential price tag of $5 billion.
The deal follows a six-year battle that saw Pfizer settle patent litigation with generic drugmakers that had challenged the efficacy and safety of the pills and in one instance, its own erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra.
Pfizer, which is based in New York, is the world’s biggest drugmaker, and is set to lose its patents on about $1.2 billion worth of its own drugs in 2013.
Eli Lilly and Company, which is based in the United Kingdom, has been a major player in the drugmaker’s business since it introduced Pfizer’s drug in 1996. Pfizer acquired US rights in Viagra from rival generic drugmakers in 1998. Its U. S. patent on the drug expires in 2013, but its other drug, Cialis, is set to become available in 2012.
Pfizer was the world’s second-largest drugmaker, with a market capitalization of $1.9 billion in 2008, and is set to lose its patent protection for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 2010. It is one of the biggest drugmakers in the world and has been an obvious winner in the last few years for its efforts to treat more than 40 million men worldwide.
In the U. S., the company’s product portfolio includes generic medicines, and Viagra is one of its top sellers. Pfizer is the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, and is set to lose its U. patent on Cialis from 2014 until 2013, and its other product, Viagra Connect, can be sold through a U. distributor, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.
A list of other drugmakers that may have entered the deal include Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline plc.; Mylan, which was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline in June; Mylan Pharmaceuticals, which acquired rights to generic versions of Viagra in May; Teva Pharmaceuticals, which acquired rights to generic versions of Cialis in June; Ranbaxy Laboratories, which acquired rights to generic versions of Cialis in June; and Watson Pharmaceuticals, which acquired rights to Viagra in November 2010.
Pfizer’s patent on erectile dysfunction drugs, known as sildenafil citrate, expired in June, the company said. Pfizer is also said to have entered into a potential deal with Teva to sell the drug in the United States, the company said. Pfizer, a US-based pharmaceutical company, is set to lose its patent on Viagra to Teva in 2014.In a statement, Teva said, “Teva has long sought to protect its market share in the United States by providing generic versions of sildenafil citrate. In an effort to address the growing prevalence of erectile dysfunction and the lack of generic alternatives to Viagra, Teva is currently focusing on acquiring and developing additional generic versions of sildenafil citrate to increase its market share and drive its demand for sildenafil citrate.”
In a statement, Pfizer noted that the company had submitted a “small number of patents and other intellectual property rights with respect to all of its products, and has also entered into an agreement with Mylan to sell rights in generic sildenafil citrate in the United States.”
